The ZEN Air Phono 2 belongs to the Air line, iFi's most affordable: a compact, light chassis, functional, made to disappear behind the system. It does its job, but it is not the object you put on display.
L'Alva Solo è il pezzo più rifinito dei due: chassis interamente in metallo, frontale in alluminio, e dettagli che a questo prezzo non ti aspetti, come il controllo di bilanciamento. È una scatola che puoi lasciare in vista senza vergogna.
The Alva Solo is the more finished piece of the two: an all-metal chassis, an aluminium front, and details you do not expect at this price, like the balance control. It is a box you can leave on show without apology.

Lo ZEN Air Phono 2 punta tutto sul silenzio: rumore di fondo bassissimo e un filtro subsonico intelligente che toglie l'ondeggiamento dei dischi imbarcati senza intaccare i bassi della musica. Il carattere è neutro e pulito, e ha margine davanti a sé quando migliori la testina.
The ZEN Air Phono 2 stakes everything on quiet: a very low noise floor and an intelligent subsonic filter that removes the sway of warped records without touching the music's bass. The character is neutral and clean, with headroom ahead of it as the cartridge improves.
L'Alva Solo è pulito e dettagliato, ma il bilanciamento è più asciutto: qualcuno lo trova un po' magro sui bassi. È un suono ordinato, mai aggressivo, che però non aggiunge calore.
The Alva Solo is clean and detailed, but the balance runs drier: some find it a touch light in the bass. It is a tidy, never aggressive sound — one that does not add warmth, either.

iFi ZEN Air Phono 2
C'è un dettaglio che pesa: il preamp più flessibile è anche quello che costa meno. Lo ZEN Air Phono 2 sta sotto l'Alva Solo di una trentina di euro e fa di più — MM e MC contro le sole MM. Per chi guarda al lungo periodo, l'aritmetica non torna a favore di Cambridge.
One detail tips the scale: the more flexible preamp is also the cheaper one. The ZEN Air Phono 2 sits some thirty euros below the Alva Solo and does more — MM and MC against MM alone. For anyone thinking long term, the arithmetic does not favour Cambridge.
L'Alva Solo chiede di più per una scatola più bella che fa meno. Il sovrapprezzo lo paghi in finitura e in quei dettagli — bilanciamento, costruzione in metallo — non in versatilità.
The Alva Solo asks more for a nicer box that does less. You pay the premium in finish and in those details — balance control, metal build — not in versatility.

Is the difference really audible, or is it just features?
At this level both are competent and quiet: the gap is more about flexibility and build than raw sound. The ZEN Air Phono 2 does have more headroom if you later improve cartridge and system, and a more sophisticated subsonic filter.
