These aren't the ten best Blue Note albums — they're the ten most longed-for. The ranking counts how many collectors on Discogs have placed the single most-wanted vintage American pressing of each record on their wantlist, from an October 2026 reading of 2,902 pressings of 429 Blue Note records issued between 1955 and 1970. It's a map of desire rather than a verdict on the music: a picture of which originals the record-hunting world chases hardest. For two titles, tellingly, the copy collectors crave most isn't even the true first pressing — and for every one of them, there's a modern reissue worth owning instead.

Method

A word on what follows: this is a ranking of wanting, not of price or of chronology. Where the most-wanted vintage pressing isn't the original, we say so and point you to the real first press.

Limits

  • Discogs splits wants across variants of the same pressing: the ranking measures the most-wanted period pressing, which is not always the first. Where the two differ (Blue Train, The Sidewinder) the card also shows the first pressing and the jump in price.
  • Counting all period variants of each record together, seven of the ten titles stay the same.
  • Prices: Discogs sales history read by hand in October 2026, converted at about £0.85 to the euro. Sales under €10 are damaged copies and are left out.
  1. Cover of Moanin' by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers

#1 · Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers

    Moanin'

    BLP 4003 · 1959 · mono

    3,420 in wantlist · want/have 1.97

Recorded on 30 October 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio, Moanin' is the Jazz Messengers' defining statement and a cornerstone of hard bop's soulful, gospel-steeped wing. Art Blakey drives the band from the drums; Lee Morgan's trumpet and Benny Golson's writing give it "Along Came Betty" and "Blues March," while Bobby Timmons's title tune became a genre anthem. This is the Messengers at their most irresistible.

  2. Cover of Blue Train by John Coltrane

    #2 · John Coltrane

    Blue Train

    BLP 1577 · 1958 · mono · «NYC» variant on both sides

    3,354 in wantlist · want/have 3.82

The only album John Coltrane made as a leader for Blue Note, recorded in 1957 at Van Gelder's Hackensack studio while he was under contract elsewhere. With Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, it catches Coltrane mid-ascent — the title track a hard-bop benchmark, the whole session a portrait of a giant in the moment just before he changed everything.

  3. Cover of Somethin' Else by Cannonball Adderley

    #3 · Cannonball Adderley

    Somethin' Else

    BLP 1595 · 1958 · mono

    3,126 in wantlist · want/have 1.50

Nominally Cannonball Adderley's date, recorded on 9 March 1958, but it plays like a Miles Davis session: Miles appears by permission of Columbia and sets the whole mood, from the famous, unhurried reading of "Autumn Leaves" onward. With Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey rounding out the group, it's one of the last times Davis worked as a sideman — and one of the loveliest.

    #4 · Wayne Shorter

    Speak No Evil

    BST 84194 · 1966 · stereo

    2,570 in wantlist · want/have 4.66 Hard to find

Recorded in December 1964 at Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio, Wayne Shorter's finest date gathers a cast at its peak: Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones. Shorter's writing — modal, mysterious, half folk-tale and half incantation — bridges hard bop and the new freedom of the sixties. One of the most quietly perfect records Blue Note ever issued.

    #5 · Hank Mobley

    Soul Station

    BLP 4031 · 1960 · mono

    2,425 in wantlist · want/have 4.39 Hard to find

Recorded on 7 February 1960, Soul Station is Hank Mobley's finest hour, the album that earned his reputation as the "middleweight champion" of the tenor. Backed by Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers (both on loan from Vee-Jay) and Art Blakey, Mobley plays with a warm, unhurried authority that rewards every replay. The quiet high point of Blue Note's tenor hard bop.

  6. Cover of Empyrean Isles by Herbie Hancock

    Empyrean Isles

    BLP 4175 · 1964 · mono

    2,264 in wantlist · want/have 5.82 Hard to find

Recorded in June 1964 at Englewood Cliffs, this is Herbie Hancock's great quartet date — just piano, Freddie Hubbard's cornet, Ron Carter's bass and the teenage Tony Williams on drums. It holds "Cantaloupe Island," later sampled into a pop hit, and balances funk, freedom and lyricism with a young band already rewriting the rules.

    #7 · Herbie Hancock

    Maiden Voyage

    BLP 4195 · 1965 · mono

    2,103 in wantlist · want/have 3.10

Recorded on 17 March 1965 at Englewood Cliffs, Maiden Voyage is Hancock's oceanic concept album, its modal calm unlike anything else in the catalogue. With Freddie Hubbard, George Coleman, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, the title track and "Dolphin Dance" became standards. It remains among the most beloved — and most serene — records Blue Note ever made.

    The Sidewinder

    BLP 4157 · 1964 · mono · variant without deep groove

    1,943 in wantlist · want/have 0.88

Recorded on 21 December 1963 at Englewood Cliffs, Lee Morgan's boogaloo smash was Blue Note's best-selling record of the era — so successful the label chased its groove for years afterward. With Joe Henderson, Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw and Billy Higgins, the title track is pure forward motion: a hard-bop hit that crossed over to a wider audience.

    Out to Lunch!

    BLP 4163 · 1964 · mono · deep groove on side 1 only

    1,841 in wantlist · want/have 3.05

Recorded on 25 February 1964 at Englewood Cliffs, Eric Dolphy's boldest, most radical album is Blue Note's deepest step into the avant-garde — angular, teetering, exhilarating. With Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson's vibraphone, Richard Davis and Tony Williams, Dolphy reimagines group improvisation. He died that June, only months after the session, which makes it a summit and a farewell at once.

    #10 · Eddie Gale

    Ghetto Music

    BST 84294 · 1968 · stereo

    1,840 in wantlist · want/have 2.91

Recorded on 20 September 1968 at Englewood Cliffs, trumpeter Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music fuses free jazz, gospel and a communal choir into one of Blue Note's great spiritual-jazz statements. A veteran of Sun Ra's and Cecil Taylor's circles, Gale made music as collective ritual — raw, exalted, and unlike anything else on the label.

How to spot an original

Early Blue Note pressings are identified by four families of marks: who pressed the record, who cut the lacquer, the shape of the label and the address printed on it. No single mark proves an original on its own: the combination does.

Where to look on a record A record seen from above: A is the label with its address, B the deep groove ring pressed into the label, C the dead wax between the label and the music, where matrix and stamps are. MATRIX-0000-A · RVG · P BLUE NOTE® ADDRESS · CITY A B C

A On the label

47 W 63rd 47 West 63rd – NYC
The address printed on the label in the late 1950s. Without «INC.» and without ® it is the earliest.
NY 23 New York 23
«47 West 63rd – New York 23»: the oldest form of the address, with the postal zone number. On some 1957-58 titles it appears on one side only.
NY USA New York, USA
The address on 1960s labels, until Liberty took over.
INC «INC.»
«Blue Note Records Inc.» on the label or back cover: on 1950s titles it points to a later pressing.
® ® under the E
The ® symbol under the E of «Blue Note» on the label. Absent from the earliest pressings, it appears on later ones.
Liberty «A Division of Liberty Records»
After the Liberty takeover (late 1965-1966) the label says so, and the P disappears from the dead wax, as does the deep groove from the label.

B The ring

DG Deep groove
The deep circular groove pressed into the label by the press. In the 1950s it is on both sides; Liberty pressings don't have it.
DG 1 Deep groove on one side
In 1964-65 many first pressings carry the deep groove on one side only. For some titles no copies with a deep groove on both sides are known.
no DG No deep groove
A flat label, without the circular groove. On its own it doesn't mean «second pressing», but it has to be read with the other marks.

C In the dead wax

P The Plastylite «P»
A small P etched or stamped in the dead wax: the Plastylite pressing plant, which pressed for Blue Note until the Liberty takeover. Often loosely called the «ear». It marks the independent-era pressings, before Liberty.
RVG RVG
Rudy Van Gelder's initials stamped in the dead wax (1950s): he cut the lacquer.
VAN GELDER VAN GELDER
The full surname stamped in the dead wax: the 1960s form of the same mark. On its own, without the P, it also appears on early Liberty pressings.

Traps

  • Moanin' — If «A-1» follows the matrix, it's a second pressing. The second has identical labels too: the back gives it away, with «Blue Note Records Inc.» in bold sans serif.
  • Blue Train — A 1957 recording: in Europe it's in the public domain. Of the 40 vinyl reissues since 2019, 29 aren't Blue Note and some are flagged by Discogs as unofficial. Buy official Blue Note editions only, and check the barcode.
  • Soul Station — Since 2019, 7 non-Blue Note European reissues have appeared (Jazz Images, Ermitage, Not Now Music, Second Records): the 1960 recording is in the public domain in Europe.
  • Empyrean Isles — There's a 2021 European reissue (Future Shock) flagged by Discogs as unofficial.
  • Maiden Voyage — Without the P in the dead wax it's a Liberty pressing (late 1965-early 1966), considered a second pressing.
