The Tubby Hayes Quartet

London's own hard-bop summit. Tubby Hayes was the British tenor who could stand beside the Americans on the Ronnie Scott's bandstand, and Mexican Green, cut for Fontana in 1968, is the peak of the jazz Soho nurtured. For decades British jazz pressings were treated as an afterthought; now this is the record London diggers chase hardest — a home-grown answer to Blue Note, recorded a short walk from Gerrard Street.

How to spot the original

Fontana SFJL 911, stereo only (no mono issue). Run-out stamped 886500 1Y▽1 / 886500 2Y▽1, with the Philips triangle ▽ — the mark of the genuine 1968 Fontana cut.

A&M · 1977

God Save the Queen

Sex Pistols

The record that barely existed. A&M signed the Pistols outside Buckingham Palace in March 1977, pressed the single — then dropped the band days later and destroyed almost the entire run. A handful survived. It's less a London grail than a London ghost: the most notorious near-record in British pop, worth the price of a small car whenever a genuine copy surfaces.

A&M AMS 7284. A knurled (milled) mark in the run-out is part of the forensic check — and fakes now outnumber genuine copies, so never buy one casually while travelling; authenticate first.

Spiral Scratch

Buzzcocks

The record that told a generation they could just do it. Recorded in Manchester and put out on the band's own New Hormones label in 1977, Spiral Scratch was one of the first true DIY punk EPs — no major, no permission, just a sleeve, a catalogue number and four songs. Nearly every British independent label descends from this small Mancunian gesture.

How to spot the original

First pressing has a cover with no "With Howard Devoto" credit, a debossed label, and "EAT THE BEAT" / "PULSE OUT" etched in the deadwax by Delga Press. Later runs add the Devoto line.

Blue Lines

Massive Attack

The birth of trip-hop, and Bristol's sound made permanent. Blue Lines grew out of the Wild Bunch sound-system and the city's slow, dub-soaked groove, and it invented a whole climate of music. Cut in 1991 as the Gulf War raged, some sleeves credit the band as just "Massive" — the moment Bristol's underground became the template everyone else copied.

Before Massive Attack broke, Smith & Mighty were already laying the Bristol blueprint — reggae bass, hip-hop breaks, pop songs dubbed into fog. This Three Stripe 12" is the deep-digger's Bristol record, the source code the wider world skipped straight past on its way to the hits.

Portishead

The other half of the Bristol sound — cinematic, cracked, sung by Beth Gibbons like a lost 1960s spy theme. Recorded in the city and named after the town down the estuary, Dummy turned Bristol's late-night melancholy into a Mercury Prize and a worldwide mood. The vinyl, oddly, is the scarce format.

Birmingham

One pub, two sounds, and the city that never separated them

Black Sabbath

Heavy metal's ground zero, and it's pure Birmingham — the sound of a city of foundries turned into music. Tony Iommi's detuned riffs came out of an industrial accident that cost him fingertips; the doom came out of the place itself. The first Vertigo pressing even credits the band's Birmingham management on the sleeve, before the line was quietly removed.

How to spot the original

Vertigo 6360 011, large "swirl" label. First press credits "Management Jim Simpson, Big Bear, Birmingham" (later deleted), and runs "Hand of Doom" straight into "Rat Salad" with no gap.

Judas Priest

The record where metal grew its wings — twin guitars, Rob Halford's operatic scream, Birmingham's heaviness refined into something balletic and cruel. Made on a shoestring for tiny Gull before the band broke big, it's the Priest album collectors chase, first-press quirks and all.

Multiracial Birmingham reggae, named after the unemployment-benefit form and sleeved to look like one. In 1980, as the city's factories closed, eight local lads put their dole card on the cover and made one of Britain's great debut albums. It's a document of Thatcher-era Birmingham you can hold in your hands.

Panjabi MC

The other Birmingham, finally on vinyl. Bhangra was the sound of the city's Punjabi community — but it lived on cassette, sold in corner shops, almost never pressed to wax. This white label is a rare survivor: British-Asian dance music from Handsworth and Smethwick, years before "Mundian To Bach Ke" went global.

Orange Juice

The first shot of the Sound of Young Scotland. Postcard Records ran out of a Glasgow flat, and its very first single — Edwyn Collins's nervy, romantic Orange Juice — set the template for indie-pop the world over. Barely 200 came with the free flexi and postcard; it's the holy relic of Scottish independent music.

Postcard 80-1, the label's first release. Originals came with a giveaway flexi and, on ~200 copies, a postcard; the deadwax reads "PORKY... THINGS ARE TOUGH" / "WE CAN STILL PICNIC."

Postcard's other great hope — Edinburgh's Josef K, all taut nerves and scratchy guitars, the austere shadow to Orange Juice's sunshine. The label's hand-made aesthetic is all over this one, and the band's early death (they split in 1982) turned the Postcard singles into the grails of Scottish post-punk.

A student project that became a legend. Stuart Murdoch's Belle and Sebastian recorded their debut for Stow College's Electric Honey label; only 1,000 vinyl copies were pressed, and for years Tigermilk was a whispered Glasgow secret trading for hundreds before its 1999 reissue. The definition of a modern grail.

The record that took Irish traditional music seriously as art. Cut for the tiny Dublin label Claddagh in 1964, it treated jigs and reels with the care of a classical release — and quietly launched the global life of Irish trad. Not expensive, but foundational: the first door into a whole tradition, pressed in Ireland.

How to spot the original

Claddagh CC2, carrying "Recorded in Ireland and pressed for Claddagh" and a smaller pressing ring. A reported "CHEAFTAENS" misprint sleeve variant is unconfirmed — verify before paying a premium.

Before the twin-guitar anthems, a Dublin power trio with Phil Lynott — the first Irish rock star — finding his voice. The 1971 debut is rawer and stranger than the hits that came later, and honest about its roots: made in London, but unmistakably the sound of a Dublin kid becoming a legend.

Four Dublin teenagers, one enormous debut. Boy caught U2 before the stadiums — all echo, yearning and the Edge's chiming guitar. The collector's target is the specific first Irish pressing where both sleeve and vinyl were made in Ireland: the truest local artefact of a band that would leave Dublin to conquer everywhere.

CBS 84658 — the only pressing with both cover and vinyl manufactured in Ireland: look for the Irish-printed sleeve with no CBS sticker. The other Irish pressings come in a UK Island sleeve with a CBS sticker over the catalogue details.

Amsterdam's hidden jazz-funk treasure. Ronald Snijders — a Surinamese flautist who made his life in the Netherlands — cut this privately, recorded and pressed in Holland, and it slipped out almost unnoticed in 1980. Decades later diggers rediscovered it: a warm, spiritual jazz-funk record that could only have come from the Surinamese-Dutch community of the city. A local private-press grail hiding in plain sight.

Early Dutch techno at its source. When Amsterdam's dance underground was still finding its voice, this ESP 12" caught it raw — a document of the city's rave years before they went mainstream. The plant that pressed it stamped its code into the wax, quietly dating the record to the exact Dutch factory that made it.

Grand Kallé et l'African Jazz

A song of freedom, tied to the city of the coloniser. Written by Grand Kallé as the Congo negotiated independence at Brussels' Round Table in 1960, "Indépendance Cha Cha" became the anthem of a continent shedding empire — sung in Lingala, danced across Africa. That the talks happened in Brussels is what makes this Congolese 45 the most loaded record on the city's map.

Brussels invented a genre and named it on the sleeve. Front 242 coined "Electronic Body Music," and this early EP is where the Belgian blueprint — martial rhythms, sampled menace, sweat — hardened into a movement that would run from EBM to techno. The city's coldest, most influential export.

When American jazzmen settled in Copenhagen, the Café Montmartre became their stage and SteepleChase their label — and SCS-1001, Jackie McLean live in the city, is where it all began. This is Copenhagen's jazz identity in one catalogue number: the exiles' second home, cut to wax.
