Why a system is not the sum of its boxes — and the criteria for getting it right

Three excellent components chosen separately can sound worse than three honest ones chosen together. That is not a forum paradox; it follows from the fact that a hi-fi system is not a league table of boxes but a chain in which every link works inside constraints set by the one before it and the one after. An arm imposes a rule on a cartridge. A loudspeaker imposes a rule on an amplifier. And the character of each adds to the character of the others, for better and for worse. One thing needs saying here rather than in small print at the bottom: the systems proposed in this strand are reasoned, not auditioned in our own living room. They are built on verifiable technical criteria — the ones set out below — and on the judgements of people who have actually listened to the equipment. Where I report a listening impression, I say whose it is, because the reasoning is ours but the ears, in many cases, belong to somebody else. This is the method hub: the three budgets live in separate pieces and come back here for the criteria.

1. Arm and cartridge: the one match with a number attached

This is where people go wrong most often, and it is also the only place where a figure has to be respected rather than an opinion.

A tonearm has an effective mass; a cartridge has a compliance, meaning how readily the stylus suspension flexes. Together they form a system that resonates at a particular frequency, and that frequency needs to fall between 8 and 12 Hz. Drop below and you are in the territory of record warps and structural vibration: the arm starts to wobble on dished records and the bass swells. Climb above and the resonance edges into the lowest audible band, thinning or colouring the bass.

The practical consequence is counter-intuitive: an expensive cartridge on the wrong arm sounds worse than a cheap one on the right arm. A very compliant cartridge wants a light arm; a stiff one wants more mass. It is not a question of how much you spent but of what pair you have formed.

The most instructive case is the Thorens TP16. In its original form the arm has an effective mass of around 16.5 grams; from the MkII onwards that drops to roughly 7.5 grams — and an intermediate version exists as well. Same name on the arm, two very different objects: a high-compliance cartridge that sings on the MkII can be the wrong choice on the original. Anyone buying a used TD 160 often does not know which version is coming until it is in their hands, which is why the question has recurred on specialist forums for twenty years. That is precisely why here the rule matters more than the product name: the name changes meaning, the rule does not.

A loudspeaker's sensitivity tells you how much sound pressure it produces for a given input, and the scale is logarithmic: three decibels less means twice the power for the same volume. An 86 dB speaker asks twice as much of an amplifier as an 89 dB one. So before looking at an amplifier's wattage, look at the sensitivity and impedance of the speakers: they set the demand.

That said, rated watts tell you far less than they appear to. The two historic budget rivals of the 1980s — the NAD 3020 and the Rotel RA-820 — are famous for exactly this. The NAD is documented as having around 3 dB of dynamic headroom, delivering well beyond its nominal twenty watts in short bursts, and at its American launch it was put in front of a 1.1-ohm load without folding. Of the Rotel, which depending on version is rated between twenty-five and thirty watts, a long-term owner writes that these amplifiers go well past their rated power on peaks, with plenty of headroom.

But headroom is not magic, and that deserves saying too: another owner documents the same Rotel struggling badly with a pair of Celestion SL6s, speakers with a reputation for being power-hungry. Taken together the two accounts give the whole truth. Dynamic reserve saves you on peaks; it does not excuse you from doing the sensitivity arithmetic. The catalogue figure on its own predicts nothing; sensitivity paired with behaviour into the load predicts a great deal.

It is a synergy frequently reported for this combination.

And then, immediately, the honest counterweight: synergy belongs to models, not to brands. In the same discussion spaces another owner finds the ProAc Studio 140 too bright on jazz with a Sugden in front of it — and What Hi-Fi's own review of that speaker warns that aggressive recordings or an already bright system will draw attention to its tweeter. Same amplifier brand, same speaker brand, opposite outcome.

Why must the arm-cartridge resonance fall between 8 and 12 Hz?
