There's a question anyone approaching vinyl asks sooner or later: how much do I need to spend before I stop doing damage? The honest answer is: less than you think. Under €500 you'll find turntables built in Europe, with carbon tonearms, decent cartridges, and mechanical engineering that genuinely means business. The trick is knowing what to look for — and above all, what to avoid.

Before the list, one fixed point: suitcase turntables under €50 damage your records. Their conical diamond doesn't track the groove — it wears it down. If you have a collection, even a small one, it's worth spending the right amount.

FAQ
Do I need to buy a separate phono preamp?
It depends on your amplifier. If it has a 'PHONO' input on the back panel, connect directly and switch off the turntable's built-in preamp. If not, use the built-in preamp or buy an external unit: the Pro-Ject Phono Box E (~€80) or Rega Fono Mini A2D (~€95) both outperform the integrated preamps on almost all of these models.
Belt drive or direct drive — which should I choose?
For daily hi-fi listening, belt drive is the right choice: it decouples the motor from the platter and reduces vibration. Direct drive is more durable long-term — no belt to replace every 3–5 years — and preferred for DJ use. The AT-LP120XUSB is the only direct-drive model in this guide.
Can I connect the turntable directly to active speakers?
Yes, as long as the turntable has a built-in preamp (all models except the Rega Planar 1 and Debut Carbon Evo). Bluetooth speakers, however, don't replace a dedicated amplifier: the audio quality difference is real and audible, especially on dynamic music like jazz and classical.
