Ortofon 2M Red vs Audio-Technica VM95E: quale scegliere?
Non due testine, due famiglie di stili: quella in cui entri ti vincola per anni
Il momento è sempre lo stesso: il giradischi è arrivato con la sua testina di serie, ci hai suonato sopra cinquanta dischi, e adesso vuoi il primo upgrade vero. Sotto i cento euro tornano sempre due nomi, la Ortofon 2M Red e la Audio-Technica VM95E, e la domanda che tutti fanno — quale delle due suona meglio — è la domanda sbagliata. A questo prezzo la risposta onesta è noiosa, e per giunta indifendibile: sono due ottime testine con due caratteri diversi.
La domanda giusta è un'altra. Non stai comprando una testina: stai entrando in una famiglia di stili. Entrambe sono modulari — stesso corpo, stilo che si sfila e si sostituisce — ma le due scale partono da quote diverse e arrivano in posti diversi. È quella geometria, non il suono di oggi, che ti vincola per i prossimi tre anni.
Here is the moment: the deck arrived with a cartridge fitted, you have played fifty records on it, and now you want the first real upgrade. Under a hundred euros two names keep coming back — the Ortofon 2M Red and the Audio-Technica VM95E — and the question everyone asks, which one sounds better, is the wrong one. At this price the honest answer is dull, and hard to defend either way: they are two good cartridges with two different characters.
The real question is different. You are not buying a cartridge; you are joining a family of styli. Both are modular — same body, stylus pulls out and swaps — but the two ladders start at different heights and end in different places. That geometry, not today's sound, is what commits you for the next three years.

Audio-Technica VM95E
Il sistema 2M è pulito ma corto: Red e Blue condividono lo stesso corpo, quindi si sale sfilando lo stilo tipped e infilando quello nudo del Blue. Cinque minuti, e Ortofon lo vende esattamente per questo. Sopra, però, Bronze e Black montano un generatore di fascia superiore: lì non stai più aggiornando uno stilo, stai comprando un'altra testina.
The 2M system is clean but short: Red and Blue share a body, so you climb by pulling the tipped stylus and pushing in the Blue's nude one. Five minutes, and Ortofon sells it for precisely that. Above them, though, Bronze and Black sit on a higher-tier generator: there you are no longer upgrading a stylus, you are buying another cartridge.
Audio-Technica gioca più lungo. Tutti e sei i modelli della serie VM95 usano lo stesso corpo e lo stesso motore, quindi dallo stesso punto di partenza puoi salire all'ellittico nudo, al microlineare, allo Shibata. Cambia anche la durata: l'ellittico si dà per circa 300 ore, il microlineare arriva a mille. La stessa scatola, per anni, con diamanti sempre migliori.
Audio-Technica plays the longer game. All six VM95 models use the same body and the same engine, so from one starting point you can climb to the nude elliptical, the microlinear, the Shibata. Life changes too: the elliptical is rated at around 300 hours, the microlinear reaches a thousand. The same box, for years, with steadily better diamonds.

La 2M Red è la più equilibrata delle due: su River Man di Nick Drake la voce sta al centro e gli archi restano dietro senza pungere, con quel carattere aperto e appena caldo che la rende universale su qualsiasi genere. The 2M Red is the more even-handed of the two: on Nick Drake's River Man the voice sits centre stage and the strings stay behind it without stinging, with the open, faintly warm character that makes it work across genres. On Steely Dan's Aja it holds Steve Gadd's kit together without pushing the cymbals forward. Correct rather than spectacular.
La VM95E è più incisiva e un filo più brillante. Su Marquee Moon dei Television le due chitarre si separano con attacchi netti, e quella nitidezza è il suo tratto migliore. The VM95E is more incisive and a touch brighter. On Television's Marquee Moon the two guitars separate with clean attacks, and that clarity is its best trait. On the same Aja cymbals, though, its brightness shows: on an already forward system it can turn edgy. Same nominal tip geometry as the Red, different character.

Con 7,2 grammi e una compliance di 20 µm/mN, la 2M Red va d'accordo con la maggior parte dei bracci entry e medi, ed è la testina che diversi costruttori montano di serie: è la scelta più universale, quella che non ti fa sbagliare. At 7.2 grams with a 20 µm/mN compliance, the 2M Red gets along with most entry and mid tonearms, and it is the cartridge several makers fit as standard: the safer, more universal choice. The faceted body has pre-threaded inserts, so it mounts without nuts.
Anche la VM95E si monta con due sole viti, senza dadi, e pesa poco (6,3 g). Ma la sua compliance è più bassa: dà il meglio su bracci di massa media o alta, e su un braccio molto leggero è meno a suo agio. Prima di comprarla, guarda che braccio hai — è l'unico vero vincolo tecnico del confronto.
The VM95E also mounts with two screws and no nuts, and it is light at 6.3 g. But its compliance is lower: it does its best work on medium- and high-mass arms, and sits less comfortably on a very light one. The 2M Red costs roughly twice its rival, and its one internal upgrade — the 2M Blue stylus — costs more on its own than a whole VM95E. It is a short, expensive ladder: two well-made rungs, then you change class. If your plan ends there, that is fine — you spent once and you are done.
La VM95E parte da molto più in basso e arriva molto più in alto sullo stesso corpo: nel listino Audio-Technica il microlineare e lo Shibata stanno intorno ai €180-220, ma ci arrivi per gradi, quando vuoi, senza mai ricomprare il generatore. Spendi meno adesso e conservi più strada davanti.

Qual è meglio, la Ortofon 2M Red o la Audio-Technica VM95E?
Dipende dal piano, non dal suono. La 2M Red è più equilibrata e universale, e sale allo stilo 2M Blue sullo stesso corpo: perfetta se vuoi un solo upgrade. La VM95E costa circa la metà ed è più incisiva, ma soprattutto porta fino a microlineare e Shibata sullo stesso motore: meglio se vuoi migliorare per gradi negli anni.
Posso montare lo stilo 2M Blue sulla 2M Red?
Sì: Red e Blue condividono il corpo, quindi basta sostituire lo stilo. È l'upgrade dal miglior rapporto qualità-prezzo della gamma 2M. Bronze e Black, invece, appartengono a una fascia superiore: lì cambia il generatore, non solo la punta.
Gli stili della serie VM95 sono davvero tutti intercambiabili?
Sì. Audio-Technica dichiara che i sei modelli VM95 usano lo stesso corpo e lo stesso motore, quindi ogni stilo della serie si monta sulla VM95E: dal conico allo Shibata. Attenzione a non confonderli con quelli della vecchia AT95E, che non sono compatibili.
Quale delle due va meglio sul mio braccio?
La 2M Red è la più universale e sta bene su bracci entry e medi. La VM95E ha compliance più bassa e preferisce bracci di massa media o alta. Se hai un braccio molto leggero, l'Ortofon è la scelta più sicura.
Which is better, the Ortofon 2M Red or the AT-VM95E?
It depends on your plan, not on the sound. The 2M Red is more even-handed and universal, and it steps up to the 2M Blue stylus on the same body: ideal if you want one upgrade. The VM95E costs about half as much and is more incisive, but above all it reaches microlinear and Shibata on the same engine: better if you want to improve in stages over the years.
Can I fit a 2M Blue stylus on the 2M Red?
Yes: Red and Blue share the body, so you simply replace the stylus. It is the best-value upgrade in the 2M range. Bronze and Black, by contrast, belong to a higher tier: there the generator changes, not just the tip.
Are the VM95 styli really all interchangeable?
Yes. Audio-Technica states that the six VM95 models use the same body and engine, so any stylus in the series fits the VM95E, from conical to Shibata. Do not confuse them with the older AT95E styli, which are not compatible.
Which one suits my tonearm better?
The 2M Red is the more universal and works well on entry and mid-mass arms. The VM95E has lower compliance and prefers medium- or high-mass arms. If your arm is very light, the Ortofon is the safer choice.
