TOP 4 · PHONO CARTRIDGES

The 4 Best Entry-Level Phono Cartridges

The most overlooked component in the analog chain. Four cartridges that turn a mediocre setup into something special.

There's a paradox in the vinyl world that almost nobody talks about openly: you can spend £400 on a turntable, another £200 on a phono preamp, and then ruin everything with a £25 cartridge. The cartridge is the only physical point of contact between your system and the record. It reads the groove. It decides how much of that music actually reaches your speakers.

And yet it's the most ignored component in the chain — a mistake you pay for with bloated bass, harsh trebles and a flat soundstage — correctable, in most cases, for somewhere between £45 and £110.

FAQ
Do I need to disassemble my turntable to replace the cartridge?
No. The replacement is done at the headshell. On Pro-Ject turntables with universal headshells it detaches with a click. On Rega decks, the cartridge body screws directly onto the tonearm. You'll need a small screwdriver and patience. The trickiest part is reconnecting the four colour-coded wires — use tweezers.
What's the real difference between a conical and elliptical stylus?
A conical stylus has a rounded tip that retrieves less detail and generates more distortion. An elliptical stylus has a more tapered tip that conforms to the groove geometry, reads high frequencies more accurately and tracks more cleanly. The difference is clearly audible on music with high dynamic range — acoustic jazz, chamber classical, well-recorded rock.
Do I need a separate phono preamp?
All cartridges in this guide are MM (Moving Magnet). If your amplifier has a 'PHONO' input, connect directly. If not, use the turntable's built-in preamp (if present) or buy an external unit: the Pro-Ject Phono Box E (~£70) or the Rega Fono Mini A2D (~£85) both outperform most built-in preamps on entry-level decks.
